UEC community

When José first came to the Urban Ecology Center, he was planting a tree in Riverside Park. It was then that UEC staff member Jeremy noticed him and came over to introduce himself and offer some advice about soil.

Since that day, José has become a vital part of the UEC community, particularly through the ROOT (Restoring Our Outdoors Together) volunteer program, where he dedicates time to plant trees, restore green spaces, and support Milwaukee’s local habitats. Over the past year, José has planted more than 100 trees and nearly 500 plants, all while gaining new skills in environmental stewardship.

“I love my trees,” he says passionately, noting how much he enjoys learning to care for them through each season.

For José, the UEC isn’t just a place to volunteer; it’s where he feels a sense of “family.” Working alongside others who share his commitment to nature (especially trees!) brings him joy, even on the toughest days.

Together with the ROOT team, José has learned to use tools, master planting techniques, and make meaningful contributions to Milwaukee’s green spaces. José describes planting trees as “therapy” and finds joy in knowing he’s doing something that matters.

“Trees are like us really, they are magnificent pieces of nature,” reflects José.

Thanks to your support, the Urban Ecology Center continues to be a place where people like José can plant the seeds of healing and community.
