Online Learning: Urban Nature-based Early Childhood Education

Introducing an interactive online course like you’ve never experienced! Let’s explore the intersection of environmental education and early childhood to encourage our next generation of scientists! Each online module presents the essential information needed to:

Inspire your inner curiosity of the natural world
Explore your local environment
Identify local flora and fauna
Interpret different habitats and natural cycles
Apply this knowledge in educating the young children in your life!

The three-credit course uses online information to guide personal, hands-on exploration of local greenspaces – putting the emphasis on OUTDOOR education by getting you out from behind your computer! Whether you’re an enrolled Alverno student, an environmental educator, an early childhood teacher, or a curious caregiver – this online course will provide the tools to feel comfortable, knowledgeable and confident in creating and leading outdoor lessons and adventures for young children.

The one-credit practicum will bring you hands-on experience at the Urban Ecology Center’s Riverside Branch. Participants will have a distinctive opportunity to see up close how UEC educators connect children in cities to nature and each other. The session will be led by Matt Flower, a registered trainer, Environmental Educator, and UEC Early Childhood Specialist.

This course is available to two different groups:

Group 1
Students currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program – Current students speak to their advisor to enroll them into the class. Graduate students are charged graduate level tuition, and undergraduates are charged undergraduate tuition.

Group 2
People who do not have any affiliation to Alverno, but are interested in enrolling in the class. Since this is not part of a "program" they do not need to go through admissions and can simply call the registrar to enroll if they are willing to pay out of pocket. They will be enrolled as part of the "personal enrichment" program, which does not require any admission process; it gets the participants a student ID and access to the online learning materials and course management software. Participants can take this class for zero credits – the personal enrichment option is a 50% reduction of the undergraduate level tuition.
