Join the Urban Ecology Center for an Eco-travel adventure focused on the fall colors along the famous north shore of Lake Superior - the largest freshwater lake in the northern hemisphere.

We will explore the diverse ecosystems and niche communities throughout northwest Wisconsin and northeast Minnesota by van, catching peak fall colors throughout the trip.

Sights include the once historic railroad town of Spooner, up-close experiences with bears and wolves, as well as a tour of Superior Bay via a boat cruise aboard the Tour Vista. We will spend three days at the Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center in Finland, MN with an extensive range of learning and adventure opportunities (could include adventure ropes, canoeing with peak fall colors, night hikes, natural history programs, astronomy program, and much more!).

There will be hikes that extend from the rustic Northwoods of Wisconsin to the waterfalls of Tettegouche and Gooseberry Falls State Park. We will visit the wolves and bears at the International Wolf Center and at the North American Bear Center in Ely, MN, the quintessential small town in northern Minnesota with an opportunity to hear wild wolves on a howling safari.

We will also have several chances to witness the famed hawk migration along the north shore throughout the trip along with plenty of time to explore all that Duluth has to offer!

Sights on our journey will include:

  • Peak fall colors throughout
  • Experience small towns of Spooner, WI and Ely, MN
  • Visit one of the few publicly accessible natural springs and an authentic log cabin in the Northwoods of Wisconsin
  • Opportunity to see thousands of hawks migrating along the North Shore
  • Participate in a wide variety of excursions to understand the complex ecology and geology of the North Shore at Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center.
    • Lots of opportunities for fall color hikes and relaxing as well!
  • Experience up-close interactions with wolves and bears at the International Wolf Center and the North American Bear Center in Ely, MN.
    • Participate in a Howling Safari to listen for wild wolves!
  • Try Grandma’s Famous root beer and learn about her storied history in the Boundary Waters at the Root Beer Museum
  • Hike two famous Minnesota state parks along the north shore of Lake Superior, experiencing their waterfalls and grandeur.
  • Explore the city of Duluth “where the land meets the sky.” Waking up to the honking of transatlantic freighters is a feeling like none other!

Covid 19 safety and Urban Ecology Center’s Ecotravel Program

At the Urban Ecology Center safety is our top priority. Our goal is to provide as safe an environment as possible for our communities. As such, we continue to monitor local, state and national regulations and recommendations and adapt our policies accordingly.

We also are eager to reinstate safe learning opportunities through Eco-travel. We are planning trips beginning in the fall of 2021 based on current safety measures and policies. As such, details may have to be adjusted, including canceling or postponing a trip. Please know that we are doing all we can to provide the best experiences in the safest way possible.
