Meet Our New Class of High School Outdoor Leaders!

Our 2014-2016 class of High School Outdoor Leaders have returned from an adventure in the Northwoods, finished their summer training, and are gearing up to start working with the Center as part of their paid two-year internship. Please join us in welcoming these 18 wonderful high school students that will become integral parts of the Urban Ecology Center community over the next two years.

I’m 16 years old and I am interested in joining the softball team next year. I enjoy being outside and exploring new things. Hopefully being an Outdoor Leader will make me become more comfortable exploring.

Chakira KiraChakira (Kira)

I am 15 years old am the youngest child of three girls. I love all bright colors! I play volleyball, basketball and run track. I also like watching football, and love reading and writing – I write a lot of poetry. I’m funny, cool, and love making new friends!

I’m 15 some of my favorite activities are hiking, biking, drawing, playing video games (especially HALO), listening to music and eating pizza. I wanted to become an outdoor leader because I wanted to see my dreams of being a conservationist come true, and to help out with the Urban Ecology Center in ways that I normally would not.

I’m 15 years old and am home-schooled. The Outdoor Leader program was a complete mix of all the things I was looking for in a summer job and at a place I already knew I liked. I am excited to see what the rest of this program will be and how it will influence me to become a better person and leader. I hope this program will take me new places and expand my horizons.

I'm in 10th grade and I am happy to be an Outdoor Leader because I like exploring the outdoors. Anything that has to do with nature I love it because nature itself is beautiful. With this job I can go experience/explore nature and learn different things.

I’m 15 and in the 10th grade. I really enjoy writing, dance and cheering. I find it as a way to express myself. I am excited about working in the animal room because it looks fun to feed the animals.

I am 15 years of age and am very interested in sports such as basketball, track, baseball, and ultimate Frisbee. I am very excited to be a part of the Community Programs at Menomonee Valley. Especially to be working with all different types of people and being outdoors at the Urban Ecology Center.

I’m going to be a junior and my summer experience was fun, I got to do some very cool things and also met cool people.

I am 16 and like to do a lot of things whether it’s reading, going to concerts, or driving around downtown while eating frozen yogurt. I am happy to be an outdoor leader because I’ve been volunteering at Menomonee Valley for a year now, I was a receptionist and I liked it but I wanted to do more than sit at a desk. I applied for the Outdoor Leader program and got accepted and the experience so far has been amazing and I can’t wait to see what else is in store.

I’m 16 years old and majoring in dance in high school. I have been dancing for 6 years. I’m currently working at the Urban Ecology Center (Riverside Park location) and I’m working with Maddy with the summer camps program. I’m really excited to be an Outdoor Leader this summer. I love kids and I love working with them. Being able to build relationships with them and to make them happy is going to be amazing!

I’m 16 years old and like to go outside and play basketball and anything that involves a ball.

I’m 17 years old and have lived in Wisconsin, Costa Rica, and Park City, Utah. I have been in love with nature my entire life.

I’m 15 years old and I moved here from Alabama in September 2013. This is my first job. I like to read, run, and play with my niece. I love being an Outdoor Leader because it gets me out of my comfort zone.

I’m 15 and I like to draw, watch Anime, read Manga, and listen to music. I also like food, PC games, and skateboarding. I’m excited to be an Outdoor Leader so I can meet new people, work with kids, and have something to do.

I’m 15 years old. I’m outgoing, positive, and awesome, and the coolest guy you’ll ever meet. I always wanted to be an Outdoor Leader as long as I’ve been a member of the Urban Ecology Center. And when some people work hard, I work harder!

I am 16 years old. I like to play with my pets, read, and listen to music. I am excited to be an Outdoor Leader to work more in nature and the environment.

I am 17 years old and love to bake many different goods like cookies or cupcakes, I also like to play sports with friends and family, see scary movies or even Disney movies in my free time. Being an Outdoor Leader is a very exciting opportunity for me because I have always loved the outdoors and learning different ways to care for our earth. The Outdoor Leader internship is a great way to get out of my shell and learn many new things and also get experiences with new things I have done or never done before.
