Come to the Candlelight Walk!

“You’ve never been to the Candlelight Walk?!” I’ve heard this question a dozen times since starting to help plan for UEC's annual Riverside Park Candlelight Walk. It’s as though I’ve told my colleagues I’ve never been to Target (which is certainly not true since I find myself there at least once a week).

I kindly remind my colleagues that I’ve only been at the center for 10 months and this will be my first time working the event.

One colleague said she brings her kids to the event every year. She told me that the kids enjoy the walk even more than the adults! In her words, “Where else can I get my kids outside at night enjoying nature and listening to beautiful stories in the woods?” I’ve heard over and over that the kids find the walk magical. Once their walk is over kids and families head back to the Center to make a craft, play winter games, eat a lot of sugar (it’s the holidays, we have to!) and drink hot chocolate by the fire.

I have another colleague that said, “The poetry and walks are beautiful and people love it. The atmosphere inside the Center with hot drinks and music is really fun.” Hot drinks and music? Well, that’s something I wasn’t planning for! I’ve quickly come to realize that we’ll have dozens and dozens of homemade baked goods and hot chocolate waiting to be eaten and drunk back at the Center for folks to enjoy after their walk. How great is that? Oh, and there will be beautiful music too!

Now that I’ve had some input from staff and neighborhood friends that have attended the event year after year I have a general idea for what to plan for this year. Here is what you should anticipate:

The trails will be lit up with candles and you’ll experience the park like you’ve never experienced it before.

The poetry and stories you will hear will offer a sense of peace. As you walk among the candlelit trails you won’t help but reflect.

The Center will be hopping with activity, music, laughter and treats.

Did I mention treats?!

The Candlelight Walk takes place on Saturday, December 15th at Riverside Park. The Candlelight Walk for Kids is from 4:30 – 6pm and the Candlelight Walk for Adults and Teens is from 7pm – 9pm. Register today. I’ll see you there!

Meghan’s love for the UEC started over 10 years ago when she was hired as a summer intern. From there her curiosity about museum science education led her to work at Discovery World and The Field Museum. Although Meghan and her husband fell in love with the Windy City (the deep dish pizza was to-die-for) they made the move back to WI and Meghan made her way back to the UEC. As Riverside Park’s Branch Manager, Meghan can’t imagine working anywhere else.
