Soaring Eagle Stationary Challenge

Rules modified from birdwatchersdigest.com

Stationary Birding Team Rules:

  • Check-in begins at 6:00 a.m. and the challenge begins at 6:30 a.m.
  • Teams consist of three people, but may have a fourth if the person is a novice—we trust your judgment on this.
  • From the Urban Ecology Center starting line, walk or bike to a fixed location in Riverside Park.
  • You will be supplied with a 17 ft. rope. Lay out your rope in a straight line—this will be the diameter of your circle and your home base as you record your bird sightings.
  • Once your rope is in place, you can start recording birds onto your WSO checklist/score sheet.
  • Two people in your team must identify the bird for it to be recorded.
  • If a bird is seen or heard from within the circle but is too distant to identify, someone on your team can leave the circle to get a closer look/listen to confirm the bird's identity. However, any new bird species seen or heard while confirming the original, can't be counted unless it's seen or heard by an "anchor" who stayed behind in your circle or is seen by you when you return to your circle.
  • The area can be left and returned to as frequently as desired, but you can only record birds that are identified from the circle. If you desire to move your circle to a new location you must start your list over from scratch.
  • You are required to have a cell phone for safety and so the Urban Ecology Center can periodically check in with your progress.
  • Return to the Urban Ecology Center by 11:30 a.m. without using fossil fuels.
  • Following your return to the Urban Ecology Center, there will be a celebratory lunch ceremony.
