Deep Roots: Native Tree & Plant Sponsorship Program

The Milwaukee Rotary Centennial Arboretum, with its grand opening in the fall of 2013, will become one of the most biologically diverse natural areas in southeastern Wisconsin. The 40-acre space will serve as a "seed factory" producing native tree and plant seeds that will help re-naturalize the 800-acre Milwaukee River Greenway.

With the help of hundreds of volunteers, the Milwaukee Rotary Centennial Arboretum has been in the planning, design and development process since 2008. After a productive summer in 2012, 255 trees, 3,208 shrubs and 7,620 herbaceous plants have been planted and this is just the beginning!

This fall we are excited to launch Deep Roots: Native Tree and Plant Sponsorship Program as we enter the intensive planting phase:

    • As many as 20 larger trees, the Majestic and Olmsted Sponsorship levels, will be planted in mid-November 2012, with several more being planted in spring 2013.
    • We will continue planting smaller trees, shrubs, native plants and wildflowers in spring 2013, all of which fall into the Canopy, Visionary and Biodiversity Sponsorship levels.

By sponsoring a tree, you will help us transform post-industrial land into a flourishing native ecosystem, create the first universally accessible nature trail to the Milwaukee River and ensure that people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities will be able to enjoy the Arboretum. In addition, you will help us reach more kids, families and community members through our school-age, citizen science, urban adventures and family programs that will use this Arboretum year-round for learning, recreation, relaxation and inspiration.

Your Sponsorship can be made in honor or memory of a friend or loved one, or simply to help make the Arboretum the very best that it can be. Below is a list of sponsorship levels, ranging from $50 to $10,000. Join us to make this vision a reality!

    $10,000: Heritage Caretaker Sponsor

The Milwaukee Rotary Centennial Arboretum is home to two Heritage Trees, meaning they have significant historical value and are considered significant landmarks. The nearly champion size Hackberry and the stately Burr Oak, planted in Olmsted's time, inspire awe in their stately size and longevity. These big beauties can reach the age of 100 years or more. These elder trees require special attention to keep them healthy and strong so they can continue to provide shade, food and shelter in our forest. As a Heritage Caretaker Sponsor you will receive an official Heritage Caretaker Sponsor Certificate, a framed photo of your tree, as well as information about the natural history of the species of tree you are sponsoring. In addition, your gift will include a luncheon for up to eight people at the Urban Ecology Center’s Riverside Park location, as well as a tour through the Arboretum where you and your guests will be able to see your Heritage Tree. You will also receive a unique, one-of-a-kind piece of art made of natural cedar to commemorate your sponsorship gift.

    $5,000: Majestic Sponsor

Choose a 10 to 20 foot tall tree from the Urban Ecology Center’s species list to be planted in the Arboretum. Majestic Trees will have a trunk caliper (or diameter) of more than 2 to 6 inches. Twenty of these trees will be planted beginning in mid-November 2012, with approximately six more being planted in spring 2013. Our trained Forestry Specialists will choose the right location for your tree based on its special growing needs. This Majestic Tree will be planted using appropriate machines to safely move the tree. It is absolutely necessary to carefully handle Majestic Trees since the root ball and tree together can weigh as much as 2000 pounds! The Urban Ecology Center staff will invite you to attend the day of planting. As a Majestic Sponsor you will receive an official Majestic Sponsor Certificate, a framed photo of your tree, as well as information about the natural history of the species of tree you are sponsoring.

    $2,500: Olmsted Sponsor

Choose a 6 to 8 foot tall tree from the Urban Ecology Center’s list of Arboretum species. Olmsted Trees, named after the late Frederick Law Olmsted Jr., the famous landscape designer who was involved in designing some the of the country’s first and oldest parks including our very own Riverside Park, will have a trunk caliper (or diameter) of up to 2 inches. Our trained Forestry Specialists will choose the right location for your tree based on its special growing needs. The Urban Ecology Center staff will invite you to attend the day of planting. As an Olmsted Sponsor you will receive an official Olmsted Sponsor Certificate, a framed photo of your tree, as well as information about the natural history of the species of tree you are sponsoring.

    $1,000: Canopy Sponsor

Choose a 3 to 5 foot tree from the Urban Ecology Center’s list of Arboretum species. Canopy Trees (named after the width of area the tree covers, including the roots and foliage) will have a trunk caliper (or diameter) of up to 1 inch. Our trained Forestry Specialists will choose the right location for your tree based on its special growing needs. As a Canopy Sponsor you will receive a Canopy Sponsor Certificate. Although Canopy Sponsors will not be given the specific location of the tree, the Urban Ecology Center can provide the donor with the general area of where the tree was planted.

    $350: Visionary Sponsor

Visionary Sponsors will sponsor a small tree, otherwise known as a “whip.” Whips are about 2 feet tall. This level of sponsorship recognizes your understanding and vision that a small tree will someday grow into a very large Heritage Tree. Visionary Trees will help sequester carbon and reduce the impact of climate change. (The number 350 has special importance. To preserve our planet, scientists tell us we must reduce the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere from its current level of 392 parts per million (“ppm”) to below 350 ppm. To learn more about climate change and the significance of the number 350, go to www.350.org.) The Urban Ecology Center will choose the tree species. As a Visionary Sponsor you will receive a Visionary Sponsor Certificate. Although Visionary Sponsors will not be given the specific location of the tree, the Urban Ecology Center can provide the donor with the general area of where the tree was planted.

    $100: Biodiversity Sponsor

Biodiversity Sponsors will help provide shrubs or wildflowers for the Arboretum. The location of the shrub or wildflower will not be recorded. Biodiversity Sponsors will receive a letter from the Urban Ecology Center that will contain “sister” seeds for the wildflower that was planted so the biodiversity impact we have is even greater. Your “sister” seeds will allow you to create the same kind of biodiversity in your own backyard that we will be creating in the Arboretum.

    $50: Nurture Sponsor

Nurture Sponsors will help ensure the care of all existing and new trees, plants, shrubs and wildflowers that will make up the Milwaukee Rotary Centennial Arboretum, are cared for, watered and protected.

All Milwaukee Rotary Centennial Arboretum Sponsors will be recognized on the Urban Ecology Center’s website, annual report and donor recognition signage for the Arboretum.

Tree or Native Plant Sponsorship Program Notes:

    • While every effort will be taken to keep all of the trees planted in the Arboretum alive, some trees will not survive. If a sponsored tree dies within three years of being planted, the Urban Ecology Center will replace the tree with a comparable tree available from the nursery. The Center cannot guarantee the planting location will be the same.
    • To ensure that both the natural habitat and viability of trees, plants, shrubs and wildflowers in the Arboretum are maintained properly, the Urban Ecology Center will only accept monetary donations, allowing our Forestry Specialists to choose the appropriate tree, plant, shrub or wildflower, as well as the appropriate location. Therefore, in-kind donations of trees, plants, shrubs or wildflowers will not be accepted as part of this program.
    • Sponsorship funds will be used to cover the costs associated with purchasing, planting, watering, maintaining and protecting Arboretum plants over time.
