Research Assistant
The primary responsibility of this part-time position is to manage a wildlife-monitoring program in the Milwaukee Rotary Centennial Arboretum, on Milwaukee’s East Side. This position will be charged with monitoring changes in local wildlife due to the conversion of a mix of barren industrial land and public parks to a public arboretum, as outlined in the Environmental Protection Agency grant: “Habitat Protection and Restoration in the Milwaukee River Estuary Area of Concern” through the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (EPA-GLRI).
The Research Assistant ensures that organisms are being monitored using rigorous scientific protocol, while ensuring a meaningful connection to the public, through the involvement of community volunteers, or Citizen Scientists. This person will additionally assist with daily operations of the Urban Ecology Center, including program development, newsletter contributions, environmental education and volunteer recruitment and training.

This part time position offers the opportunity to get to know the “nuts and bolts” of running a dynamic, fast-growing nonprofit organization. A significant role of this position is to ensure a positive experience for visitors by overseeing the reception area, equipment lending, membership recruitment and visitor’s experience initiatives in Washington Park.
The Visitor Services Assistant will train and manage reception volunteers or cover the receptionists’ duties when no volunteers are available. They will also manage Equipment Lending at Washington Park, a unique membership benefit where members of the Urban Ecology Center can borrow outdoor adventure equipment for free. They will assist with various Visitor Experience projects relating to exhibits and signage and help to support the office as part of the Washington Park team. Experience in customer service and strong communication, organization and computer skills are required. Experience working in a non-profit and/or with volunteers strongly desired.

AmeriCorps Member Activities
The member at the Urban Ecology Center will serve as an Outreach and Volunteer Coordination Assistant at our Washington Park branch. The Outreach and Volunteer Coordination Assistant is a team-oriented individual who works with the Volunteer Coordinator, all Center staff and volunteers, both prospective and current, to ensure that the organization’s volunteer needs are filled. The Volunteer Coordination Assistant implements all aspects of the system used to recruit, train, coordinate and recognize volunteers for all Center operations, programming and other activities.
