The Urban Ecology Center and Menomonee Valley Partners are excited to announce another milestone in our joint partnership, Menomonee Valley – From the Ground Up. Thanks to many funding partners, project partners and the recent multi-million dollar gift from the Burke Foundation, we are moving ahead with construction on the Urban Ecology Center Menomonee Valley branch!
A vacant tavern at 37th and Pierce is being rehabbed into a “green” environmental community center. Designed by Uihlein Wilson Architects and opening in the fall of 2012, the branch will open to serve eight schools and grow to serve 22 south side schools who are clamoring for our Neighborhood Environmental Education Project. Like our buiding in Riverside Park, our Menomonee Valley branch will serve as a model of "green" building options. And of course we can't wait to have a space where we can get to know our neighbors!
Menomonee Valley - From the Ground Up is a significant $26 million urban revitalization project led by Menomonee Valley Partners, Inc. and Urban Ecology Center, Inc. in partnership with the State of Wisconsin and City of Milwaukee. Together, we are completing a number of projects that will weave the Menomonee Valley back into the community and to add key assets essential to job accessibility, environmental and family health, quality of life, and neighborhood vitality. Projects implemented through From the Ground Up include new bike/pedestrian offerings for area residents and businesses, a third branch of the Urban Ecology Center in the Valley, and the transformation of a 24-acre brownfield and former rail yard into a park.
